A recent article in the NY Times came out talking about how meals at Chipotle are basically monstrous calorie bombs. Of course multiple people shared the article with me due to my obsession with Chipotle. In fact, if it were possible I would be a spokesperson for their company the same way Happy Gilmore was for Subway.
Either way, do these high caloric meals at Chipotle scare me? Nope and here is why:
- I have damage control with the calories by ordering a salad instead of a burrito or burrito bowl.
- I order double beans and add in veggies along with the usual lettuce that comes with. Less calories, more fiber, more filling.
- When it comes to the sour cream, I make sure they put a very small amount on instead of dump a full scoop on. This is where most of the calories come from when they calculate (average meal was over 1000 calories!). I do the same with the cheese.
- I share the chips and guac with my wife. I highly recommend sharing if you do in fact need to order chips.
- The food is of good quality. Other than the chips, you aren’t getting refined calories. Even if the guacamole is highly caloric, it is still very healthy for you at a moderate dose (remember to share!). They mention the high saturated fat content, which would come from the full fat dairy of the sour cream and cheese. You can lessen this by following my third point above. Also, the saturated fat in full fat dairy may not be as worrisome as once thought given recent studies.
Follow these tips above and don’t worry about it. Or if you are trying to gain weight, then disregard these tips 🙂
