Starting July 15, 2015 I will be at the Olney Medstar Family Medicine Clinic.
What do I do?
I do the full gamut of family medicine but my focus is on:
- Weight Loss Medicine (Bariatric Medicine)
- Diabetes / Metabolic Syndrome
- Lipids (Cholesterol)
- Exercise
- Nutrition
- Hormones
Diabetes / Metabolic Syndrome
One of the coolest things to see in my clinic is when someone “cures” their diabetes with lifestyle. I take great pride in helping my patients do that if possible. I do still use medicines of course when necessary. I am able (Starting Aug. 1) to get some VERY advanced labs that can detect diabetes brewing before most standard tests.
Weight Loss Medicine
I try to mostly help folks get leaner and meaner by way of diet, exercise, and sleep, but I also look for other underlying causes as well. Sometimes a weight loss drug is added if deemed necessary. I plan on getting my ABOM (American Board of Obesity Medicine) certification this year.
Lipids / Lipoproteins (Cholesterol)
I am very fascinated in prevention of heart disease and lipoproteins (the small proteins that carry cholesterol) play a large role in this. Just like with the diabetes, I am able to get some very advanced labs to look at how a patient’s lipoprotein profile/metabolism will put them at risk for future heart disease.
Exercise
Being a former division 1 NCAA athlete gives me a nice background to help folks start a new exercise program. My undergraduate degree at UNC-Chapel Hill was Exercise Science as well. All things being said and done, I think Exercise is the best medicine of all.
Nutrition
Treating most chronic diseases needs a touch of exercise and likely a better overall nutrition plan. I help all my patients achieve this.
Hormones
Ah in case you think I am just giving out hormones to anyone and everyone who walks into my clinic, that’s just not me. I will prescribe hormonal therapy to those only in need.
Since I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (Autoimmune Hypothyroidism) myself, I am very interested in making sure patients are diagnosed correctly with hypothyroidism and are on the right medicine. This may mean Synthroid (Synthetic T4 only), Synthroid plus Cytomel (Synthetic T4 + T3) or Armour (or other desiccated thyroid medicine).
Hypogonadism (Low Testosterone or Low T) is running rampant due to the diabetes / obesity epidemic. Some men may need a boost with a prescription while others may just need a better lifestyle. If you do need testosterone, I am able to do creams/gels/shots/pellets. We may even determine that instead of testosterone you need something like HCG or clomiphene to get your own testosterone working again. I can help you with all of that and discuss the risks and benefits of all.
Women’s hormone replacement therapy is controversial but I can help in that realm too. We can discuss risks and benefits and get you on the right path.
